Christopher Downes
CEO, Australasia

Chris Downes has been CEO of DVA since 2005. He currently leads the company's Direct Mail operations, providing strategic direction and assisting clients with their donor development strategies. Since his return from Canada in his role of International CFO of DVA Navion, he has built a team of experts providing strategic advice, creative and copywriting, logistical planning for Direct Mail programs. In that short period of time, DVA has had an impact in the Direct Mail field with some exceptional results in acquisition, donor reactivation and renewal programs.

He is also actively involved with DVA's work with the AFL in establishing sustainable funding strategies with a number of the clubs during its work over the last 3 years. With 17 years of experience in the consulting field he has a diverse experience in providing direct mail, major gifts, capital campaigns, bequest programs throughout the not-for-profit sector working with welfare, healthcare, disability services and education. He is an owner and Director of DVA and is a member of the FIA and AICD.




Wm. Edward Laity
CFRE, Partner DVA Navion Australasia

As Partner in DVA Navion Australasia, Ed brings his ongoing significant North American experience to our clients in Australia and New Zealand. His experience of well over 25 years is now shared with DVA Navion's clients during his regular visits to Australia and New Zealand each year. His strategic thinking and ability to review progress and set future goals keeps campaigns seriously on track.

Ed has planned and managed major capital campaigns, directed feasibility studies and helped strengthen annual giving programs working with a number of clients around the world. He has extensive experience working with National and International clients including Salvation Army, American Association for the Blind.

In his career, he has directed campaigns with goals totalling more than $100 million. He is a frequent lecturer, with a background in capital campaigning, board development, direct mail, special events, planned giving, marketing and communications. He is an alumnus of Georgia State University.




Leanne Down
Direct Marketing Manager

Leanne is a seasoned direct marketer with more than 15 years of industry experience.  She has had a successful and accomplished career, holding senior level sales and marketing management positions in blue chip companies. She is known for her ability to build and motivate winning teams and develop innovative business programs from B2B, Consumer and fundraising direct marketing and on-line marketing. An enthusiastic marketer who is performance driven  and a powerful leader with a proven track record.

Leanne is focused on applying direct marketing expertise and product technical solutions to business needs.  Leanne has an outstanding ability to manage customer relationships, manage multiple priorities, tasks and time. She conducts herself professionally and understands the importance of ethical business practices. Leanne projects a positive image - demonstrating confidence in DVA Navion's ability to succeed. Leanne has been with DVA Navion since June 2006. She has excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills and a talent for providing direct marketing insight and development of program strategy.




Carla Muscat
Account Manager – Direct Mail

Carla has over 20 years experience as a Production Manager in the Health Insurance industry. Throughout her time she has gained an in-depth understanding of the mailing and printing industry, working with a range of departments including Marketing, operations & the CEO’s office. Due to the diversity of business types and customers and suppliers that she dealt with she had the opportunity to meet many people. Her sound knowledge of the mailing industry is one of her strong attributes. Her customer must come first attitude is one of Carla’s finest qualities. Carla’s wide experience within that service industry lends herself to a great multi purpose roll within the office allowing her to quickly adapt to the changing business environment.

During her free time she enjoys spending time relaxing and enjoying laughs with her family and friends, watching and participating in sport, shopping and when the opportunity presents itself, she loves to travel both locally and overseas.




Michael Downes
Senior Strategic Advisor

Over the past twenty years, Michael has established himself as an international expert on fundraising. In New York in 1988, he was unanimously elected to be the founding Chair of the World Fundraising Council, representing over 30,000 fundraising professionals around the world. This international exposure has allowed him to work in most major markets throughout the world where organised fundraising exists. He is a Fellow of the Fundraising Institute of Australia, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Fellow of the Advertising Institute of Australia with a Diploma of Marketing Studies from R.M.I.T. in Melbourne. With such a strong reputation, Michael is a much sought after speaker at major international fundraising conferences. He has given plenary sessions at NSFRE conferences in the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico, the Association of Healthcare Professionals in the U.S.A. and Canada, the ICFM conference in Birmingham, England, African Conferences, South East Asia workshops and on several occasions he was the featured speaker at the blockbuster Amsterdam International Fundraising Workshop and the Australian Fundraising Institute conferences. His book "Downes on Fundraising" sold out three print runs worldwide over ten years. It is now out of print and has become a collector's item in fundraising circles.




Emmi Albers
Strategic Advisor

Emmi is a strategic advisor on direct mail fundraising clients to DVA Navion in Australia and New Zealand.

Emmi manages a large number of national and international direct mail clients including World Vision, Greepeace amongst many others from planning through to implementation which involves mailing to donors throughout Africa, North America and Europe.

A regular visitor and contributor to the Australian business, Emmi has over 27 years experience in fundraising.




Richard Solomon
Creative Director

Richard is one of the Creative Directors of DMI and DVA Navion, He is responsible for developing creative strategies and appeal mailing concepts for a large range of local and international welfare organisations. He leads our team of in house and freelance copywriters and designers.

With a diploma in Journalism, Richard honed his writing and design skills as a newspaper reporter and layout artist. He provides strategic advice on creative presentation and leads a growing 'online' fundraising business which provides counsel and management of online campaigns and assessment of charitable internet sites for DVA Navion clients worldwide.




Denise Murray

With over twenty five years' experience writing direct mail fundraising appeals for the whole spectrum of our Southern hemisphere clients, Denise's forte is writing emotive copy that tells life changing stories.

She is also a master hand at creating sincere and moving 'thank you' letters, which she believes are the crucial first step in acquiring repeat gifts.

Denise has been writing for a number of our Australian and New Zealand clients producing exceptional results in both renewal 'warm' and acquisition 'cold' campaigns.




Vivian Christianson

Viv's relationship with Downes Murray and its predecessor companies goes back to 1978 when Terry Murray appointed her to a management position in one of his entrepreneurial businesses. Over the years she "osmosed a vast knowledge of direct response alongside her career in the printing industry and in banking management.

Her copywriting mentor was an American who was a doyenne of fundraising.

Since then Viv has honed her skills in the field of commercial direct response. Her experience and skill set bring s new edge and approach to copywriting for many clients and her work with the DVA Navion's client will be noticed.




Robyn Joubert

Robyn is an experienced journalist and copywriter with a BA majoring in English, Journalism and Politics. Prior to working with DMI and DVA Navion she was editor for a National Magazine and layout sub-editor for Business Day, and also freelanced for various magazines overseas.

An experienced typographical proof-reader, Robyn has an eye for detail that ensures her work is always right on target. Robyn serves the Australian business in this capacity.






Susan J. Egles, CFRE
Senior Vice President, Canada

A respected fundraising consultant since 1986, she has experience with a wide diversity of clients. Sue has forged a strong reputation for her success in leading complex fundraising campaigns in a variety of settings across Canada and the United States and her expertise in developing innovative fundraising plans and motivating high-level volunteers. In addition to being a seasoned major gift fundraising professional, she is one of Canada's experts in high quality telefundraising campaigns. Sue graduated with honours from Queen's University in Kingston Ontario in 1985. She is committed to the advancement of the fundraising profession and serves as a faculty member with the AFP Survey Course and the AHP Primer.

Emmi Albers
Co-Owner (South Africa)

In her capacity as Co-owner and Client Services Director, Emmi controls the Direct Mail fundraising programmes of a large number of national and international welfare organisations, from planning through to implementation. Assisted by the team, Emmi co-ordinates the production of material for print and other media for all DMI clients. A founder member of SAIF and former co-ordinator of the Durban Chapter, Emmi has many years experience in fundraising, including ten years in the client service field, where she gained valuable experience in the running of campaigns for both commercial and non profit organisations. At the invitation of our Australian associates, Downes, Venn & Associates, she has conducted a series of direct mail fundraising workshops in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Wm. Edward Laity, CFRE
C.E.O. North America

During his many years as a fundraising professional, Ed has planned and managed major capital campaigns, directed feasibility studies and helped strengthen annual giving programs. Not only has he worked in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but he also has experience working with a number of international clients located around the world. Before becoming a consultant, he was the director of development at Boys Clubs of Metro Atlanta where he planned and executed a successful capital and endowment campaign and served as Community Relations Director for The Salvation Army in Louisville, Kentucky. In his career, he has directed campaigns with goals totaling more than $100 million. He is a frequent lecturer, with a background in capital campaigning, board development, direct mail, special events, planned giving, marketing and communications. As a past president of the NSFRE's Georgia chapter, Ed served on the Society's National Assembly and was chair of its professional credentials committee. He is an alumnus of Georgia State University.

Ron Mooney, CFRE
Senior Consultant

With nearly a quarter-century of experience, Ron is a highly accomplished professional fundraiser with experience in the design, development, and implementation of capital campaigns. He has organized and directed institutional development and public relations programs for both educational and social service organizations and served as a fundraising consultant. Other areas of expertise include major donor solicitation, coordinating and training regional directors of development, feasibility studies, development program audits, designing and writing public relations materials, cultivating and identifying prospects and volunteers, writing and presenting proposals, conducting estate and will seminars, gift club programs, phone-a-thons, and trust and bequest planning. He has served as speaker for civic clubs, the Association for Fundraising Professionals, and planned giving seminars. An active volunteer, Ron has taken leadership roles with such organizations as Rotary Club International, United Way, Lions Club, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Ron received his Bachelor’s degree from Wayland University in Plainview, Texas.

David G. Lalka, PhD
Senior Consultant

Dr. Lalka has spent the majority of his professional career in higher education. He has served successfully as Vice-President for Advancement at Summit Christian College , Asbury College , and Trevecca Nazarene University . David’s areas of expertise include development planning and assessment; campaign planning and direction; annual fund programs; major gift programs and executive search services. With an undergraduate degree from Houghton College , Dr. Lalka holds advanced degrees from Western Illinois University , and the University of South Carolina . During his career he has raised more than $100 million in gift support and has served a wide variety of non-profit organizations and institutions across the country.

Renée H. Jensrud
Senior Consultant

Renée Jensrud brings a wealth of fund-raising and management experience to the clients she serves. She has been working in the nonprofit arena since 1991, both as a development officer for nonprofit organizations and as a consultant. Prior to joining DVA Navion, Ms. Jensrud worked for various nonprofit organizations including Emory University, Senior Citizen Services of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc. and SciTrek, Georgia ’s Science and Technology Museum. Years of working “in the trenches” allows her to understand the challenges facing development staff and their volunteers. Her professional development experience includes campaign planning and feasibility studies; capital campaigns; annual giving campaigns; special events; marketing and communications; strategic planning; donor cultivation and relations; volunteer and staff management and training; prospect research; and grant writing. Ms. Jensrud has been active in the Association of Fund-raising Professionals for many years and has served on the boards of both the Georgia and New Mexico Chapters. Prior to working in the nonprofit sector, Ms. Jensrud worked in the retail and banking industries and owned her own company. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Vassar College .

Gary Hoag
Senior Counsel

As a seasoned development officer and leader, Gary Hoag has spent a lifetime serving the faith-based community.  He earned a B.A. in business from Cedarville College, received a Masters of Divinity at Talbot School of Theology, and was ordained as a minister with the Evangelical Free Church at St. Jude’s Anglican Cathedral in Canada.  Hoag raised personal support for five years and spent 14 years encouraging people to support Christian higher education at BIOLA University, Colorado Christian University and Denver Seminary, where he served as Vice President of Advancement from 2002-2009 and coordinated the campaign to build a new seminary campus.  Hoag teaches a course called Stewardship and Resource Development as an adjunct professor at Denver Seminary, while also working on a Ph.D. in New Testament on The Rich and their Relationship with Riches in 1 Timothy at Trinity College in Bristol, England.
